Nestled along the iconic I-25 in Santa Fe, New Mexico, Harry’s Roadhouse serves regional favorites from all across the nation. On this episode of Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives, Guy Fieri tries scrapple with a Southwestern twist that would even make a Philly native do a double take.

Harry’s Roadhouse, once an old gas station, has transformed into a community staple where the ambiance is as comforting as the grub. It’s the kind of place where even Oscar-winning celebs like Gene Hackman can blend into the background, munching on mouthwatering dishes without a second glance.

Quirky and welcoming, it’s exactly what you’d hope for in a roadhouse – a charming spot where “everything is tasty and yummy.” (We just love it when the food is so good that the patrons can’t find the words to describe it!)

What sets Harry’s apart is their homemade scrapple, a Pennsylvania Dutch specialty that typically includes scraps of pork mixed with cornmeal. But Harry’s does it differently. Guy Fieri couldn’t hide his initial apprehension about scrapple, often known for using various ‘mysterious’ parts of the pig. However, Harry’s uses pork butt.

The process involves dicing the pork butt, simmering it in a pork stock filled with onions and spices, and then grinding the concoction. A sprinkle of marjoram, sage, and salt later, and the mixture starts to thicken into the scrapple that Harry’s patrons adore. Pan-fried in a little clarified butter until it gets that perfect crunch, Guy’s reaction to his first bite is nothing short of ecstatic. “That’s good… seriously,” he exclaims, admitting his surprise at just how much he enjoyed the flavor and texture.

While the scrapple might steal the spotlight, Harry’s eclectic menu dazzles with regional American and Southwestern specialties. Imagine lemon ricotta pancakes topped with fresh strawberries, homemade cinnamon rolls, or blue corn waffles with bacon strips baked right in – “that’s what I’m talking about,” Guy enthuses.

But Harry’s mastery of flavors doesn’t stop at breakfast. Their New Mexican dishes, such as the Chilaquiles with homemade salsa, demonstrate a deep respect for regional tastes. The salsa alone is a labor of love, made with roasted tomatoes, onions, garlic, a blend of spices, and the subtle heat of habanero peppers. Pair this with crispy tortillas, refried beans, eggs, and queso fresco, and you’ve got a breakfast that brings the heat in the best way possible.

Harry’s Roadhouse isn’t just a place – it’s an experience, one that reflects the spirit of Santa Fe with each dish served. As Fieri puts it, Harry’s is about proving yourself every day, and that’s what keeps this Roadhouse as a go-to spot for both locals and travelers alike. Whether you’re in jeans and a tee or decked out in your finest, Harry’s welcomes you with open arms and a plate full of scrumptious food.
