Turkey and Swiss Hawaiian Roll Sliders

Apple slices bring a little tartness to smoked turkey and Swiss without turning the filling into a holiday leftover sandwich. Slice the apple thinly enough to soften during the covered bake. Thick wedges make the top slab wobble and leave cold pockets around the meat. A modest spread of mayonnaise keeps the turkey moist, while mustard in the topping reins in the sweetness of the rolls.

Ingredients

  • 12 connected Hawaiian sweet rolls about 12 oz
  • 12 oz thinly sliced smoked deli turkey
  • 6 oz Swiss cheese sliced
  • 1 small Granny Smith apple cored and sliced 1/8 inch thick
  • 2 tbsp mayonnaise
  • 3 tbsp unsalted butter melted
  • 2 tsp Dijon mustard
  • 1/2 tsp dried thyme

Method

  1. Heat the oven to 350°F. Split the connected Hawaiian rolls horizontally and set the bottom slab in a parchment-lined 9-by-13-inch pan.
  2. Spread mayonnaise over the bottom slab and add half the Swiss. Fold on the turkey, distribute apple slices in a thin layer and add remaining Swiss.
  3. Replace the tops and brush with butter mixed with Dijon and thyme. Cover loosely with foil.
  4. Bake for 15 minutes, then uncover for 8 to 10 minutes until the cheese melts and the center reaches 165°F.
  5. Rest for 5 minutes before cutting into 12 sliders.
