Southern Style Cornbread

A traditional Southern style cornbread made with cornmeal, buttermilk, egg, butter, and optional sugar.

Ingredients

  • 1 egg
  • 2 cups White Lily cornmeal
  • 1 1/2 cups butter milk you can subsitute for regular whole milk
  • 1/4 cup sugar OPTIONAL
  • 2 tbsp butter

Method

  1. In a medium mixing bowl, add in your cornmeal, buttermilk, egg, and sugar (if adding). Mix completely together until all combined.
  2. Begin to preheat your oven to 400 degrees.
  3. Allow to preheat and in a small casserole dish, melt 2 tbsp of butter. Place in the oven while it is heating up and allow the butter melt. Leave in the oven until it is completely melted.
  4. Once your oven is finished preheating, remove your pan out of the oven.
  5. Add in your wet mixture and place in the oven, and bake for 30 minutes.
  6. You can remove out of the oven once, it does not jiggle in the middle, completely golden brown, or put a fork in the middle of the pan of bread. If the fork comes out clean, it is done. If it doesnt, then continue to bake.
  7. Once your bread is completed, allow to cool, or you can cut and enjoy with some butter.

Notes

Please be cautious and wearing heat protectant gloves while removing the pan from the oven. It will be extremely hot.
Total time: 30 minutes.
