Pizza Hawaiian Roll Sliders

Brown the mushrooms until the skillet looks dry before adding them to the rolls. Pepperoni, mozzarella and a thin smear of pizza sauce supply the familiar flavor, but uncooked mushrooms would release enough moisture to make the bread heavy. The butter topping gets a little oregano. Keep the sauce inside the filling and out of the seams so the tops can brown cleanly when the foil comes off.

Ingredients

  • 12 connected Hawaiian sweet rolls about 12 oz
  • 6 oz cremini mushrooms finely sliced
  • 1 tbsp olive oil
  • 1/2 cup thick pizza sauce
  • 3 oz thin pepperoni slices
  • 6 oz mozzarella cheese sliced
  • 3 tbsp unsalted butter melted
  • 1/2 tsp dried oregano
  • 1/4 tsp garlic powder

Method

  1. Heat the oven to 350°F. Cook mushrooms in oil over medium-high heat for 7 to 8 minutes until browned and dry.
  2. Split the connected Hawaiian rolls horizontally and place the bottoms in a parchment-lined 9-by-13-inch pan. Spread pizza sauce over the bread, leaving a small border.
  3. Layer on half the mozzarella, mushrooms, pepperoni and remaining mozzarella. Replace the top slab.
  4. Mix butter with oregano and garlic powder, brush over the tops and cover with foil. Bake for 15 minutes, then uncover for 8 to 10 minutes until the cheese melts and the center reaches 165°F.
  5. Rest for 5 minutes and cut into 12 sliders.
