Pecan-Crusted Cheddar Cheese Ball

The mid-century cheese ball is practical party food disguised as a centerpiece. Sharp cheddar and Worcestershire keep the cream cheese from tasting flat, while a pecan coat supplies the crunch. Bring this one back, but skip the fluorescent jarred cheese that gave the category its reputation.

Ingredients

  • 8 oz cream cheese softened
  • 2 cups finely shredded sharp cheddar cheese
  • 2 tbsp finely minced scallion
  • 2 tsp Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 tsp Dijon mustard
  • 1/2 tsp garlic powder
  • 1/4 tsp ground black pepper
  • 1 cup finely chopped toasted pecans

Method

  1. Beat the cream cheese in a medium bowl until smooth and free of cold lumps.
  2. Mix in the cheddar, scallion, Worcestershire, mustard, garlic powder and pepper until evenly combined.
  3. Scrape the mixture onto plastic wrap and shape it into one compact ball.
  4. Refrigerate for 1 hour until firm enough to handle.
  5. Roll the ball in the chopped pecans, pressing lightly so the coating adheres, then chill until 20 minutes before serving.
