Mild Taco Sauce

Mild sauce is tangy and cumin-forward, not just watered-down fire sauce. Tomato sauce supplies body while vinegar keeps it lively after refrigeration. A pinch of cayenne is enough to register without taking over.

Ingredients
  

  • 1 can tomato sauce 15 oz
  • 1/2 cup water
  • 3 tbsp apple cider vinegar
  • 1 tbsp chili powder
  • 1 tsp ground cumin
  • 1 tsp onion powder
  • 1/2 tsp garlic powder
  • 1/2 tsp kosher salt
  • 1/8 tsp cayenne pepper

Method
 

  1. Whisk the tomato sauce, water and vinegar in a saucepan.
  2. Add the chili powder, cumin, onion powder, garlic powder, salt and cayenne.
  3. Bring to a gentle simmer over medium-low heat.
  4. Cook for 10 minutes, whisking twice, until lightly thickened.
  5. Cool completely and transfer to a clean jar.
  6. Refrigerate for at least 4 hours and use within 10 days.
