Green Bean Casserole with Fried Onions

The famous 1955 casserole still works. Limp beans don't. Use thawed frozen beans for a little bite and save most fried onions for the final stretch. Their salt and crunch are doing real work against the mushroom sauce.

Ingredients

  • 24 oz frozen cut green beans thawed and patted dry
  • 1 can 10 1/2 oz condensed cream of mushroom soup
  • 3/4 cup whole milk
  • 1 tsp Worcestershire sauce
  • 1/4 tsp black pepper
  • 1 can 6 oz French-fried onions, divided

Method

  1. Heat the oven to 350°F and grease a 2 1/2-quart baking dish.
  2. Whisk the soup, milk, Worcestershire and pepper in the dish until smooth.
  3. Fold in the green beans and 1 cup fried onions until evenly coated.
  4. Bake uncovered for 25 minutes, until the sauce bubbles around the center beans.
  5. Stir the casserole gently and scatter the remaining fried onions over the top.
  6. Bake for 8 to 10 minutes more, until the onions are crisp and deep golden, then rest for 5 minutes.
