Cook the bacon in a large skillet over medium heat for 7 minutes until browned but still pliable, then transfer it to a 7-quart crockpot.
Brown the beef, sausage and onion in the bacon drippings for 10 to 12 minutes, breaking both meats into small crumbles, until they reach 160°F.
Drain all but 2 tablespoons of fat and stir the garlic, chili powder and cumin into the skillet for 1 minute.
Transfer the meat mixture to the crockpot and stir in the tomatoes, beans, broth and salt.
Cover and cook on low for 6 to 7 hours until the chili is thick and the beans are tender, then stir well before setting the cooker to warm.
