Place the ham, butter beans, onion, bell pepper, garlic, ancho powder, paprika, tomatoes, broth and molasses in a 6-quart crockpot.
Stir well, cover, and cook on low for 6 hours until the onion is soft and some of the beans have broken down.
Mash about 1 cup of butter beans against the side of the crock and stir them into the red broth.
Check that the ham is steaming hot and at least 165°F, then stir in the vinegar.
Taste before adding the salt, using only enough to sharpen the beans without making the smoked ham harsh.
