Chocolate Malted Milkshake

A malt is not just a milkshake with an old name. Malted milk powder gives chocolate ice cream a toasted, slightly savory finish and thickens the drink. Use as little milk as the blender will tolerate.

Ingredients

  • 3 1/2 cups firm chocolate ice cream
  • 1/3 cup whole milk
  • 1/4 cup malted milk powder
  • 2 tbsp chocolate syrup

Method

  1. Chill two tall soda-fountain glasses in the freezer for 10 minutes.
  2. Add the milk, chocolate syrup, malted milk powder and chocolate ice cream to a blender in that order.
  3. Pulse 5 times to break up the ice cream, then blend for 15 to 20 seconds until thick and barely pourable.
  4. Stop and add 1 tablespoon milk only if the blades spin without pulling the mixture downward.
  5. Pour immediately into the cold glasses and serve without letting the malt soften.
