Combine the cherries, sugar, cornstarch, water and lemon juice in a wide skillet while the pan is still cold.
Cook over medium heat for 8 to 10 minutes, stirring, until the cherries are hot and the sauce turns clear and glossy.
Remove the skillet from the burner, stir in the brandy and return it to low heat.
Simmer for 2 minutes to soften the alcohol edge, then remove from the heat and stir in the vanilla.
Spoon the warm cherries and sauce over six bowls of firm vanilla ice cream and serve immediately.
